InterCommunity in the Schools

group school children

The East Hartford Board of Education has selected InterCommunity as the new provider of primary care and behavioral health services in its school-based health centers.  Beginning June 30th, InterCommunity will staff and operate five centers in the following schools: East Hartford High, East Hartford Middle, Mayberry Elementary, Silver Lane Elementary, and Hockanum Elementary Schools.  The plan is to expand to additional schools within the disctrict in the near future.  Vincent Crawford, the Assistant Coordinator of Program Planning and Development for the schools, stated  “InterCommunity, Inc. best met our goals as listed in the RFP (Request for Proposals) and offers more opportunities and services for both children and families throughout our district.”

School-based health centers provide services beyond the scope of the school nurse.  InterCommunity will work closely with the nurses and any other outside care providers as well as act as a resource center for wellness and prevention. InterCommunity will provide an array of services including:

  • Diagnoses and treatment of minor injuries and illnesses (such as colds, ear infections, sore throats, etc.)
  • Mental health and substance abuse risk screenings
  • Routine well-child check-ups
  • Physical examinations, including sports physicals
  • Immunizations
  • Prescriptions and dispensing of medication
  • Laboratory testing, including on-site point of care testing
  • Diagnosis and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases
  • Management of chronic conditions, such as asthma
  • Nutrition counseling and weight management
  • Crisis intervention and assessments
  • Individual, family and group counseling
  • Dental sealants & fluoride treatments
  • Referral & follow-up for specialty and dental care

We look forward to providing quality whole person healthcare to East Hartford children and families through this opportunity.
