How We Can Help
(HWCH)

 Outreach, Education, and Support

Services in Your
Community

How We Can Help (HWCH) is an outreach program led by InterCommunity to provide mental health and addiction support for individuals facing crisis—before they end up in the criminal justice system.

Our staff work directly with first responders and are embedded within the Greater Hartford Harm Reduction Coalition. Together, we connect people—especially those struggling with opioid use disorder or homelessness—to critical services instead of jail.

What We Do:

  • Provide on-the-ground support to individuals in crisis
  • Partner with Hartford Police to offer treatment referrals in place of arrest
  • Offer education and resources to first responders about addiction, mental health, and trauma-informed approaches
  • Build trusting relationships through consistent outreach and harm reduction practices

Who We Help:

  • Most referrals come from law enforcement and involve individuals:
  • Struggling with opioid addiction
  • Experiencing homelessness
  • Living with untreated mental health conditions

Why it Matters:

HWCH is about connection over criminalization. We meet people where they are—with dignity, respect, and real pathways to recovery.
