Reflecting on Mental Health Awareness Month at InterCommunity
As May comes to an end, we take a moment to reflect on Mental Health Awareness Month—a special time when people across the country talked openly about mental health and showed support for those who are struggling. At InterCommunity, it was a month full of hope and healing. But our work doesn’t stop here. Every day, we continue to provide mental health and addiction care to people across Greater Hartford.
Mental health challenges can happen to anyone, at any age. That’s why InterCommunity makes it easy to get help. We offer services at our clinics in Hartford, East Hartford, and South Windsor. With Same-Day Access, people don’t have to wait weeks or months to be seen. They can walk in without an appointment and leave with a customized care plan to get the support they need right away.
Our services include one-on-one therapy, group therapy, psychiatry, and help during a crisis. We also support children, teens, and families. For Spanish-speaking members of our community, we offer bilingual services with caring professionals who understand their needs.
Why is this work so important? Because even though Connecticut was recently ranked #2 in the country for mental health and well-being, not everyone has an easy time finding care. A report from the Connecticut Senate Democrats said that people still face barriers when trying to see in-network mental health providers. That’s why programs like ours are so important—we help fill those gaps, right in the heart of the community.
We also support people recovering from addiction. InterCommunity has been helping people overcome substance use for over 45 years. Our programs include Intensive Outpatient (IOP), Extended Outpatient (EOP), and Medication treatment to help with addictions (Substance Use Disorders; formerly known as MSUD). These services help people learn new skills, manage challenges, and build healthier lives.
For example, we use safe and proven medicines like buprenorphine and naltrexone to help with opioid or alcohol addiction. But recovery is about more than medicine—it’s about finding the right support, having someone to talk to, and getting help with things like housing, food, or job training. Our team works with each person to make a care plan that fits their life.
And we don’t stop at our clinics. Our Mobile Unit travels around the Greater Hartford area, offering health services like vaccines, physical exams, and behavioral health assessments. This makes care more accessible to people who might not otherwise get it.
We also know that the need for mental health care is real, especially in Hartford. According to DataHaven’s 2023 Equity Profile, about 1 in 4 adults in Hartford say they have poor mental health. That’s higher than the state average. But numbers like these only push us to work harder—and with more heart.
During Mental Health Awareness Month, we reaffirmed why we do this work: because everyone deserves to feel better, to be heard, and to be helped. “At InterCommunity, we deliver the kind of mental health and addiction care that transforms lives—because healing isn’t a privilege, it’s a promise we keep to our community every day,” said Dr. Chad McDonald, Chief Medical Officer at InterCommunity.
That promise doesn’t end in May. It continues all year long. Our doors are open, our hearts are ready, and our team is here to support anyone who needs help—today, tomorrow, and always.
Let’s keep moving forward. Let’s keep talking about mental health. Let’s keep helping one another heal. Because hope grows stronger when we grow together.
