Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Marlene Kurban • Oct 09, 2022

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a campaign that encourages women to learn about screening options and risk factors. Besides skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common cancer among American women, and mammograms are the best way to find breast cancer early, when it’s easier to treat. While most breast cancers are found in women who are age 50 and older, breast cancer also affects younger women. Men can also get breast cancer, although it is not common.

Risk factors for breast cancer include family history, age, and other factors. You can help to lower your risk of breast cancer by:

  • Maintaining a healthy weight
  • Being physically active
  • Limiting alcohol use or not drinking at all
  • Breastfeeding your children, if possible
  • Be vigilant about breast cancer detection
