The Importance of Vaccines For All Ages in National Immunization Awareness Month and Beyond

Protecting Our Communities, One Vaccine at a Time

August is National Immunization Awareness Month, a time to highlight the important role vaccines play in protecting people of all ages from preventable diseases.

Immunizations are one of the most effective ways to protect the health of ourselves and those around us. Staying up to date on recommended vaccines can help prevent serious illness, lessen the severity of symptoms, and reduce the spread of disease within our families, schools, workplaces, and communities.

As families prepare for a new school year, immunizations should be part of the back-to-school checklist. Children may have specific vaccination requirements based on their age and school enrollment, and some may need routine vaccines or boosters. Before the first day of school, consider checking with your child’s healthcare provider to ensure their vaccinations are up to date. This is also a good opportunity to schedule a physical, discuss any health concerns, and make sure your child is set up for a healthy school year.

Vaccinations are important for adults, too, especially with flu season right around the corner. Notably, older adults may benefit from vaccines that help protect against illnesses that can become more serious with age. Recommended immunizations can vary based on age, health history, and other individual factors. Talking with your healthcare provider can help you determine which vaccines may be appropriate for you and whether you are due for any routine boosters.

Looking for a primary healthcare provider? InterCommunity can help you, your child, and your whole family! And, your student may be able to receive care right at school if they are enrolled at one of our 11 School-Based Health Centers in East Hartford and Manchester. Contact us today for an appointment at 860-569-5900 or walk into one of our clinics for same-day access to care.

At InterCommunity, we believe that whole-person health includes taking steps to prevent illness, not just treating it when it occurs. Immunizations are an important part of preventive healthcare for children, teens, and adults alike.

If you’re unsure which vaccines you or your family members may need, talk with your healthcare provider. They can help you understand recommended immunizations based on factors such as age, health history, and lifestyle. This National Immunization Awareness Month, take a moment to check your family’s vaccination records and talk with your doctor to set your family up for a healthy rest of the year.

Mental health conditions touch nearly every community, workplace, and family in America, yet many people continue to struggle in silence. According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), approximately 22.8 percent of adults — roughly one in five people — experience a diagnosable mental illness each year.
